Town Fair Road Race 5K - SHS Indoor Track Fundraiser
July 2, 2010 - Dan Crowley, Enterprise Newspapers
Once again this year the Sandwich Town Fair Road Race will benefit the Sandwich High School Indoor Track team. Members of the SHS cross-country and indoor and spring track teams will run in the July 10 event to raise funds to support the indoor program. According to organizers there will be t-shirts for the first 100 entries and gift bags for the first 200 runners, as well as prizes and medals for top finishers in each age group. There will be music, mini-massages and gait analysis at the finish line. The Sandwich High Indoor track team averages approximately 70 student-athletes each season and the event is their largest fundraiser of the year.
“Almost all of our cross-country and track team runners will participate in some form, whether running the 5K distance or being at water stations or helping out at finish line with crowd management,” Coach Steve Infascelli said “Our indoor program will be in its fifth year this winter. Last year we were partially funded by the school. This is a great opportunity for people to say, I had a chance to help a great team of young athletes; I directly gave them the opportunity to compete at the highest level of competition. That can be extremely rewarding, and empowering. We’re always looking for help and we'll always welcome an extending hand. I hope the people who have graciously made donations to this team realize their importance and how extremely thankful we are for their kindness.”
“It means a lot,” SHS boys’ varsity cross-country team senior captain Gavin Jones said of the community participation in the event. “We all love to run and we can’t do it without funding. We’d love it if everybody would come out and help support our indoor team.”
The group heading up the event for the SHS Indoor team are Jana Lefavor along with Sarah Regan, Cindy Travers, Jodi Starck, Elaine Warren, Mary Kelly and Kristine Whaples.
“They all make up our committee,” Coach Infascelli noted. “They are incredible people and I love them dearly. Without them this program would be lost.”
The race begins at Sandwich High School at 10 AM. Registration forms and more information is available at www.sandwichindoortrack.org. There is a discount for registrations received by July 3.

Tim Regan Wins 300 Meter - Knights Head to All-State
Feb 26, 2010 - by Dan Crowley, Enterprise Newspapers
Sandwich High School senior Tim Regan won the 300 meter at the MIAA Division 3 State Track & Field Meet Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, posting a time of 36.59 seconds. The Blue Knights finished in a three-way tie for eighth place. Sandwich finished with 16 points as did Bishop Stang and Dighton-Rehoboth high schools.
Regan holds the school record in the 300 with a time of 35.70, set earlier this year.
“Tim was ranked first by a lot,” Coach Steve Infascelli said. “His instructions were to run as easy as he could to advance, which he did. The gun went off, and he immediately made up the stagger and was the first to the breakpoint. He then took a look around and eased up a lot once he realized he was in control and would advance.
In the final he was to run as hard as he could, so as to get a fast seed time for the all-state meet next week. Unfortunately Tim had been ill the past week. Because of this he was a bit worn down. He certainly lost some weight last week, which was mostly muscle, so his time in the final was disappointing, more so for him, not for me. But a win is a win. It’s his first major win, and he should be proud of himself.” The SHS 4x400 team of Sam Ellis, Dana Murphy, Dave Regan, and Tim Regan finished fourth in a time of 3:35.45, just a second off the SHS record.
“Our 4x400 relay was the most exciting race of the evening,” Coach Infascelli pointed out. “Sam Ellis ran hard out of the blocks and immediately took the lead after the first corner. He split a season-best 52 in the first 400m leg. He handed off to Dana Murphy who probably had one of the harder legs to run. It’s tough to get the baton in the first place. There is a certain amount of courage and maturity needed when you’re in that kind of position. He carried himself well. Two runners had passed him in the middle stage of the race but not without a fight, which certainly fired up our team. He handed off to Dave Regan, who late in the leg, started to gain ground on second and third place. I think he knew that if he could close the gap just a bit for his brother Tim that we’d have a great shot at placing second. Dave handed off to Tim in a season-best time of 54 seconds, and Tim was off and running. I was pleasantly surprised at how well Tim had recovered from his earlier two races; that’s a lot of work he did. Coming off the turn and into the backstretch he swung wide and tried to pass the two runners; however, they successfully held him off and because of this Tim had to run extra distance in the outside lane three around the final turn. He hung on well for fourth place, splitting a 51 for his leg.”
Dave Allen (9:57.57) ran fifth in the two-mile, with Jason Lefavor (10:30.40) taking 16th place.
“Dave Allen’s two-mile was a very scary race,” Infascelli said. “Dave was ranked fifth coming in, with a personal best of 9:55: five seconds off Ted Vrountas’s school record. Dave likes to run a very even-paced race, and his race went out very, very fast. He was off the back of the pack after just a half mile. I was a bit nervous; however, Dave is a tough-as-nails-type of runner. After one mile (4:52) some of the other runners started to fade and come back to him. He kept running strong and ran the last half mile very aggressively to pick off a few runners to place fifth overall, advancing to all-state. I’m excited to see how he’ll run next week. Jason Lefavor had a bit of a bad day in the two-mile. Earlier in the season he had posted a national qualifier at 5,000 meters. He’s got to get over this bad race, so he can do well at the national championships.”
Ellis finished in eighth place in the 55-meter high hurdles in a time of 8.33 seconds, and Stephen MacDonald took 22nd in the one-mile with a time of 4:51.60.
“Steve just had an overall bad day,” the coach noted. “It’s unfortunate that his bad day came at a state meet competition. His finish was far from his best time.”
Junior Mikhaela Tropp ran seventh in the 300 meter for the Lady Knights, posting a time of 43.31 seconds.
“Mikhaela also advanced to the final by running seventh in the trials,” Infascelli explained. “She also placed seventh overall, just missing qualifying for the all-state meet. I think we could have worked on her start during vacation a bit more and that might have been the deciding factor between being an all-state qualifier and not. She’s a great competitor, and we’ll take this as a learning experience. She’ll certainly be a shining star for us come spring, just as she was all last year.”
Girls’ Track Defeats Plymouth North
Feb 12, 2010 - by Dan Crowley, Enterprise Newspapers

The Sandwich boys’ team fell to the Eagles 54-46. Senior Stephen MacDonald set a new school record I the high jump taking first place clearing 5-11. Sophomore Ben Clabault delivered his first varsity win in the 600 meter posting a time of 1:45.10. Sam Ellis finished first in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.38 seconds and took third in the long jump at 18-5.25.

The Sandwich Indoor Track 4x400 relay team of Tim Regan, Sam Ellis, David Regan and Dana Murphy placed 11th in a field of 19 posting a time of 3:34.06. Tim Regan Sets New 300 Meter Record
Boys’ Track Splits Double Dual Meet
Jan 29, 2010- Dan Crowley, Enterprise Newspapers
The Sandwich boys’ indoor track team posted a 63-36 victory over Norwell Friday, but at the same time lost the other end of their tri-match to Falmouth, 60-40. Senior Tim Regan set a new school record for the Knights (3-2) winning the 300 meter.
“Tim Regan set a school record in the 300 meter dash running a time of 35.70,” Coach Steve Infascelli said. “That time is very, very fast. It is the third fastest time run in the state this season. At this point in the season we're training very, very hard. I was a bit surprised by the time because Tim is in the middle of a very difficult training block. The next few weeks will be the hardest training he has ever done as a high school athlete. Hopefully he can get a bit faster once we start to cut back on the intensity of the workload. ”
Jason Lefavor won the 1000 meter in 2:49.8 and Stephen MacDonald won the high jump clearing 5-9.
“After losing the meet against Marshfield last week our focus has shifted from winning a league title, which is now impossible, to that of getting our state qualifiers ready for the big meets,” Infascelli explained. “We used this last meet to either work on speed or strength work. Jason Lefavor and Dave Allen will be running the mile and two-mile at the state meet, so against Falmouth they raced the 1000 meter run, and then came back to race the 4x400 relay. That double is going to give them the speed they need to be successful at the higher level. If athletes stay in their best event, it becomes stale, and no progress can be made. By running a different event, either one up, or one below their specialized event, they are adding a new stimulus.”
Allen ran second in the 1000 meter in a time of 2:50.9.
The Blue Knights 4x400 relay team also picked up a first place finish posting a time of 3:48.9.
Sam Ellis (8.5) ran first against Norwell and third against Falmouth in the 55 meter hurdles and took first in the long jump (18-4) over Norwell, while placing third against Falmouth. David Regan (1:31.2) was first in the 600 meter against Norwell and second against Falmouth.
The Lady Knights (0-5) lost to Falmouth (65.5-24.5), Norwell (56-33) and Brockton (67.5-20.5)
Mikaela Tropp won the 300 meter for Sandwich with a time of 43.6 and Lauren Duffy won the two-mile, posting a time of 13:13.6.
Liz Duffy (6:09.5) finished first in the one-mile ahead of Brockton. She was second against Falmouth and third against Norwell. Rebecca German (8.93) was first in the 55 meter hurdles over Norwell. She finished third against both Falmouth and Brockton.
The girls 4x200 relay team finished ahead of Falmouth and Norwell, but were second to Brockton with a time of 1:57.4.
The Knights return to action this weekend in the Massachusetts State Coaches Association Invitational Meet.
Indoor Track Relay Teams Set Two School Records
Jan 22, 2010
by Dan Crowley - Enterprise Newspapers
The Blue Knights wrote some new school records Sunday at the Massachusetts State Coaches Association Division III Relays at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Sandwich took fifth place in a field of 32 in the 4x4 relay with the team of Tim Regan, Sam Ellis, Dave Regan and Jason Lefavor posting a school record time of 3:35.35.
In the 4x2 relay the Knights also set a new school record finishing seventh in a field of 45. The team of Tim Regan, Ellis, Todd Davis and Dave Regan ran a time of 1:36.27.
In both events the Blue Knights advance to the MacIntyre Elite Relay Invitational to be held next month.
“This was primarily used as a workout for some of our state qualifiers in hopes of obtaining a very high seed time for the divisional championships in a few weeks,” Coach Steve Infascelli said. “We've kind of been in a lull where we’ve gone a few weeks without competition. We’re working hard and using this time to increase our volume of work so the kids have been quite tired. In a few weeks we'll cut back a bit and then the fun will really start. With well rested legs we'll get a crack at a few more qualifying times.”

“We lost the big one,” Coach Steve Infascelli said. “It happens. But I've told the kids a dozen times each day is a learning experience, we can find positives from this loss. I hope we can learn from our mistakes, apply this newly acquired data to our training and execute our race plans when it counts.”
Tim Regan brought home two victories for the Knights winning the 55 meter dash (6.75) and the 300 meter (36.5). Regan was second in the long jump at 18-4.

Lauren Duffy brought home a pair of second place finishes in the 1000 meter (3:31.4) and the two-mile (13:44.4). Ashley Whelan took second in the shot put with a toss of 23-7.5.
Gauthier ran third in the 55 meter dash at 8.55 seconds, Cutler was third in the 300 meter at 50.5 and Travers finished third in the long jump at 13-0.5. Bethany Gomes was fourth in the 600 meter (1:58), Travers was fourth in the 1000 meter (3:33.2) and Liz Duffy ran fourth in the one-mile at 6:16.6.
Hilary Gonnesville took fifth in the one-mile (6:17.3) and Rebecca German finished fifth in the 55 meter hurdles at 11.83 seconds.

“Jamie was our fifth man for the majority of the cross-country season and you're only as strong as your fifth man,” Coach Steve Infascelli said. “He was one of the states best fifth men. I have been calling him our rock for two years now as he is always turning in solid performances. If I need something done, if I need someone to give that extra effort in championship pressure situations; I look no further than Jamie Goins.
Knights Gear-Up For Indoor Season
Fundraising Brings Members Of Track Team Together
For members of the Sandwich High School indoor track team, the work required for a successful season begins before they run their first lap.
That is because, like participants in the high school’s other unfunded sports squads, members of the track team are responsible for raising the money to cover all the costs associated with their sports.
Though the school committee last month approved a plan that would help partially fund indoor track, wrestling, and sailing, and fully fund the girls’ hockey team, the track team will still be on the hook to raise between $10,000 and $15,000 this year to help pay for officials, travel, league dues, coaching salaries, and the right to the use the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, where their meets are held.
Before this season began, members of the track team raised $960 toward their cause by holding a raffle for a yard cleanup.
Members of the team and their coach Steven C. Infascelli sold tickets, and then spent last Sunday afternoon cleaning up the winner’s yard.
It was the second year in a row that the track team has held the yard cleanup raffle.
Members of the team also raise money by working at concession stands during school sporting events and organize a road race held the same weekend as the Town Fair in July.
Rather than complaining about the extra effort they have to put in to keep their sport afloat, members of the team say they appreciate the extra challenge.
On Wednesday afternoon before warming up for practice, members of the team said all the fundraising brings them closer and makes every race that much more special.
“It kind of builds a camaraderie among the team members,” senior Jason R. LeFavor said. “We all know we have to work extra hard to get on the field.”
Events like the yard cleanup are also kind of fun, Jason said.
The extra work does have a way of weeding out those runners who really are not interested in giving the team their all.
“It shows who’s really dedicated,” senior Jameson D. Goins said.
Mr. Infascelli, who has coached the winter team for four years, agreed.
He said his athletes realize that participating in sports is ultimately something they have to earn, and that each race they run is the result of hard work, both on and off the track.
Mr. Infascelli is responsible for 70 runners who take part in throwing, jumping, sprinting, and distance running events and he said, in a less cash-strapped district, he would have a few assistant coaches to help him oversee the many athletes of various disciplines.
That is the hardest part of the job, he admitted.
Mr. Infascelli said that being the sole coach of a squad with so many athletes has also forced him to put extra trust in his captains, and they have rewarded him with the efforts in leading the team.
“I rely on my captains so much,” he said. “I’ve been preparing my seniors for this responsibility for the last four years, and now they really have become like my assistant coaches.”
Mr. Infascelli said parents Patty Ellis, Mary Kelly, and Jana LeFavor have played a major role in planning the fundraisers. It was Ms. Ellis who was responsible for organizing the yard cleanup.
Without them, the team would not be able to raise nearly as much money as they do.
“They’re the heart and soul of the operation,” he said, before taking a moment to reconsider. “Actually, they’re the brains of the operation. The runners, they’re the heart and soul of this.”

He also won the high jump at 5-6. He has been a member of the winter and spring track programs at SHS for three seasons, played soccer for two years and ran cross-country last fall.

Riedel & Regan Run All-State Meet - Knights Move On To National Stage

Sandwich High School senior Emma Riedel finished 12th in a field of 22 runners in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.53 at the MIAA All-State Track and Field Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Friday. The SHS boys were represented by junior Tim Regan who finished 15th in a field of 24 runners in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.78.
“Both Emma and Tim were a bit disappointed, but after thinking, hey, only 11 (or 14) people in the entire state of Massachusetts are faster than I am, I think they left the meet pretty happy,” Coach Steve Infascelli said. “It’s quite an honor just to be running at this meet. The two of them have come so far and they are certainly looking forward to the national meet. Hopefully they can both set personal bests and end the season at the highest meet running their fastest times.”
Riedel, Regan and SHS senior Caroline Conena have qualified to participate in the Nike Indoor National Track & Field Meet March 13-15 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Conena will run the 800 meter.

“Caroline Warren was our MVP this season scoring 43 points in ACL competition,” the coach explained. “She lowered her own school record in the 300 meter dash with a time of 43.08. Warren anchors both the girls 4x2 relay and the 4x4 relay.”
In the 600 meter it was Caroline Conena who received ACL all-star honors.
“Caroline Conena in only her second try at the 600 meter distance set a ACL record,” Infascelli pointed out. “In doing so she broke the school's record and also qualified for the National Championships with a time of 1:40.00. She has the fastest split in both 4x2 and 4x4 relays.”
On the boys side of the all-star coin Bradley Bailey earned all-star honors in the 300 meter.
“Brad is one of the guys on the team who was overlooked his first two years,” Coach Infascelli noted. “But last year he popped an amazing race and now he's setting personal bests every time he steps on the track at whatever distance. A Division II qualifier at the 300 meter he failed to make the final, but that only fueled his drive for next season in outdoor track.”
Senior David Koren received ACL all-star honors in the two-mile.
“David ran undefeated in league competition and has established himself as one of Sandwich's most consistent runners,” the coach said. “Quiet and soft spoken, he has lead this team by example all year. David is not supposed to be as fast as he is but his hard work and determination to excel has put himself in a class high above the rest of the pack.”
Sandwich sophomore Sam Ellis took home ACL all-star honors in the 600 meter.
“Sam is the future of this team,” Infascelli noted. “He wants to compete and maxed out in each meet running the 600 meter dash, the 55 meter hurdles, and setting a new school record in the high jump of 5-5. A Division II qualifier in the 600 meter dash he has a bright future if he continues his work ethic throughout the year.”
lady Knights Michaela Berger and Emily Duerr received the Sportsmanship Award.
“It was my goal this season to work with Caela and her hurdling ability,” the coach explained. “She scored well last outdoor season as a surprise second at the league championships. She worked extremely hard all season long and finally mastered “3-stepping” the hurdles which is an incredible feat. She will be counted on to lead this team next year. Emily had the toughest job of the season. She was an alternate for the girls 4x4 relay team. She had to warm up and be mentally ready to go at the drop of a hat in case one of the other girls was injured. With all the success that the 4x4 relay team earned this year it was tough for Emily not to be recognized. She will have an extremely bright future in this sport and she wants to run that 400 meter to earn her spot on the team.
Greg Bailey and Dana Murphy collected Sportsmanship Awards for the boys’ team.
“This is Greg's second sportsmanship award and he continues to be successful in this sport,” Coach Infascelli added. “He will be leading our cross-country team next fall as captain and combined with his twin brother, Brad make a great 1-2 combination in any of our relays. Dana is just now realizing his potential as a miler. It will be fun comparing his times to the other great milers that we've had in the past. This outdoor season we'll test him in a lot of tough workouts and he'll most likely get the green light in a few fast 4x8 relays in hopes of qualifying for the Division II championships.”
